I posted this documentary on the forum already (vids thread), but I thought that it might be useful to post the excerpt focusing on the 'game of life' here as it might stimulate discussion. I'm sort of a newbie to this, but I do find it fascinating how very simple rules can create very complex patterns.

one thing that is interesting about it is that you tend to have to create very specific patterns in order to keep them going. if you fill the grid randomly, they ultimately tend to die out, leaving static patterns and oscillators. this is especially true if the grid doesn't wrap around.
