Twitter Can Predict the Stock Market says computational social scientist Johan Bollen of Indiana University-Bloomington But why does it work? “The short answer is, we don’t know,” Bollen said. It’s reasonable to assume that people’s moods will have some effect on their investments, he says, but more research is needed to figure out exactly how. Bollen does not know but maybe it works because we're living in a simulation of some sort. http://arxiv.org/abs/1010.3003 "We are living in a computer programmed reality." - Philip K. Dick, 1977

Very interesting! As a trader, I may have to include this in my bag of tricks. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if the explanation is as simple as:
- Twitter can identify public mood (due to news, weather, whatever) - When market makers are in a good mood they are bullish and push the market up. Vice versa when in a bad mood.
Or could it have to do with future projections like the recent study posted here on psychic phenomena?

Mr. Elvidge, you are right I guess, I would go by the simpler explanation (Occam's Razor) "Twitter can identify public mood" "We are living in a computer programmed reality." - Philip K. Dick, 1977

Any programmers out there? This is just scratching the surface. Let me know, I'd love to partner on some ideas.

I was a programmer in a previous life. Then I had to go out and earn a living. I'm afraid my programming skills may be a little out of date.

You new know. You might have skills enough. Seriously, the more I thought about this. You know, if we are correct about the simulation philosophy, it should follow that it would offer us advantages in creating technology, products and services. Some could be possible world-changing. Throughout history, those who were on the edge of scientific discovery were able to do so. There's a lot of brain power on this board, I think.
