When I first read this I thought it was a mistake. At this rate will might see zetta-scale supercomputers by 2020!

Wiki article also mentions this project.

Wow!

So, where does that stand in relation to the human brain?

This article implies that the human brain runs at 100 Teraflops and the existing IBM Roadrunner is already 15 times that speed at 1.5 Petaflops: http://signal-integrity.tm.agilent.com/2009/when-will-computer-hardware-match-the-human-brain/

Kurzweil says the human brain runs at 20 Petaflops: http://illuminati.wordpress.com/2007/11/13/2015-a-machine-that-thinks-as-fast-as-the-human-brain/

Either way, machine power is right at the cusp of human brain processing power.

Of course, that doesn't mean we're at the cusp of Strong AI. There are a lot of research and software breakthroughs necessary first before that can be claimed. So the hardware guys have done their job - let's see if the software guys can catch up.

In any case, it still won't have an emergent consciousness.
