are any other mammals other than humans aware that the sexual act produces their offspring?

What a great question!!!! I've always wondered how scientists determine that dogs only see in black and white. How do they know how they perceive the world? They must, Sambuca, because of the maternal and paternal instincts of the parents.

hi terrorgoat. i think science has shown with special instruments that certain animals see shades of black and white and others do see some colors. i accept that parental care in not only mammals but most of the animal kingdom exists in varying degrees but that does not mean that at the time they have sex either partner knows that weeks or months later (22 for elephants) the offspring came about because of sex that took place then. my question arises from watching many nature documentaries where the narration claims that male lions and certain other creatures will kill the offspring of a female so they can impregnate her to have their offspring so their dna prevails. i want proof that at the time of the sexual act that these creatures are able to project future thoughts of such knowledge and until such proof i must believe they are only acting on instincts from hormonal activity. yes socrates is quite right. we still know nothing of who we are and where everthing originated.

I've a vague memory of listening to a radio programme years ago, which discussed a tribe (possible based in South America) who did not connect the sexual act with that of birth. Really.
