Great blog post Jim. Up to your usual high standards. I'm in a bit of a rush as I have to catch a train, but before I go, I thought I might draw your attention to this academic paper: "A Framework of Variant Logic Construction for Cellular Automata" (a lot of high level Maths involved, so not for the fainthearted!). http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs/15019/InTech-A_framework_of_variant_logic_construction_for_cellular_automata.pdfTo Quote: "What are the essential differences between modern binary logic and the I-Ching's dynamic binary structure? The Unification of these two schools of thought would bring greater understanding of the world we live in (Whincup, 1986). As the modern formulation of Cellular Automata generates complexity through binary logic whilst the I-Ching analyses complexity through binary logic, the modern language of the I-Ching can be found in the creation of a structural definition of Cellular Automata"Also, check out Stephen Wolfram's work on the dynamics of CA [in particular Rule 30- "00011110" (base2)- his "all-time favourite rule"]. Here's one link: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Rule30.html Cheers! the "Bot"

Is the Universe a big Cellular-Automaton Computer? A very useful and comprehensive treatise of Wolfram's complex ideas can be found in Ray Kurzweil's, "Reflections on Stephen Wolfram's A New Kind of Science' http://www.kurzweilai.net/reflections-on-stephen-wolfram-s-a-new-kind-of-science

Thanks for these, "Bot"! I will get to them, one of these days, when my schedule lightens a bit. Did you recently move to Australia?

Jim, I'm a 'Ping Pong Pom'!!! I'm a Scot who emigrated to Australia 5 years ago but my job brought me back to the UK for the whole of last year. I've just recently moved back to Australia.
