Wow, the day after I started this thread I come across an interview done with the man himself on youtube (I've searched under his name a few times before and have come across a podcast but no video broadcast) very recently. I found it interesting.

Sounds like a forerunner of nanobot swarms.

Do you think that weather and tsunami buoys fall into the category of spimes?

They know where they are, they are intelligent, store data, take measurements, and communicate it to external computers.

Interesting idea.

This Vinge paper is from last year. I think that his idea of graphing an aspect of technology against population size is very imaginative.
